Another special day in my life with Scribus
Jun 8th
This post is something special. We made a trial to share our Asianet internet connection by creating an ad-hoc connection and we succeded in our venture. Thanks to my dear friend Alex Poovathingal for the same. Now, we are able to connect to Internet in all our Laptops with Alex’s Dell Inspiron 1525 kept as Internet gateway.
I entered into chat with my sister and my friend Primal; also I opened my IRC client and connected to #scribus-dev. I was waiting for Pierre to respond for a long time and today, I got a response from him. I had earlier submitted a patch to him, in which I tried a hand to migrate QWorkspace class in Scribus to QMdiArea. This was needed since Qt documentation specifies that QWorkspace class is deprecated. I knew that execution of code which I gave will cause a few segmentation faults and I had specified that to him earlier. He gave me some wonderful reports after investigating my patch and asked me to work furthur on the same.
I saw Oleksandr Moskalenko ( IRC Nick: malex ) poking me and as usual, I entered to some nice chat with him. He asked for my email id, sf.net username etc. and I provided the same. Then the precious moment arrived. I got this message from malex : ” malex> jainbasil: I just added you as a member of Scribus project on sf.net ”
whoohoo… I was given Commit access to Scribus Subversion in sourceforge.net.
Thank God ! This was the moment I’ve been waiting for !
Helping hands to Schools using Free Software
Apr 5th
I am very much excited to kick off this idea. The idea is to build a Free Software for Schools in Kerala. In other words, this is to help teachers ( or office staff) to administer their schools properly and to give a technical life to educational systems in our state. My mother works as Head Mistress in a Govt. U.P School. I have been seeing her working late night writing reports, preparing account stuffs, promotion lists and all those useful ( rather useless ) stuffs. So, I was planning to implement a solution for this by developing a software for handling all these things efficiently.
So, here is a rough draft of the proposal. There may be flaws in this write up since these are random ideas which came into my mind when I discussed with my mother.
My plan is to build the application using C++ and Qt ( UI ), a MySQL database for storing the informations. Qt will make User Interface more eye candy using KDE 4 style.Application is to contain modules that will handle both Academic works and Office works. I would like to implement academic stuff in first phase and gradually get into office works. The basic need is to store the student information with photographs, all details of academic performance, handle the admission procedure, a tool to handle Transfers etc. Report Generator is a necessity and this should be able to generate reports based on any key ( like name, class, cast/religion or any other custom formats ). I emphasize this as a necessity since I have seen my mother preparing these reports by-hand for their head offices.
The above said is just a plan; we may implement more stuff into it ( for eg, indic support, managing office staff details, bills, letter preparing tool etc.. and many more…). I would like to receive comments and suggestions from the community to make this a success. A detailed road map of this poject will be available soon after receiving the exact requirement sheet from the concerned.
