Resizing your Partitions using Gparted
Nov 20th
GParted is the Gnome Partition Editor application. It is used for creating, destroying, moving, checking and copying partitions.
Now i would like to share my own experience.I installed Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex into my Sony- Vaio with 5.gb for / (/dev/sda11), 15 gb for /home etc.. After adding more softwares into my Gnu/Linux system, filesystem showed 0 bytes free.
I had to check for another way to resize my partitions so as to increase the size of root filesystem. And here is my successfull method….
Resizing of partitions should be done only after unmounting them.(See my earlier post on mounting the partitions in Gnu/Linux)Since it is not possible to unmount the root directory from Gnu/Linux, I had to boot from Ubuntu 8.10 Live Cd.
After booting up, I opened a terminal and typed in gparted. This opened Gparted, Gnome Partition Editor for me.It displayed all my partitions as block diagrams.See the Screenshot below
I had to resize the partition named /dev/sda11 from 4.7 GB to 20.0 GB. I choose the partition /dev/sda12, a partition near-by to /dev/sda11 and opted resize. From the window, I resized the partition /dev/sda12 to 20.0GB from 45.0 GB so that i have an unallocated space of 15.0 GB. I just resized the partition /dev/sda11 to accomodate 15.0 GB space more. Finally I got the partition /dev/sda11 of size approximately 20.0 GB without lose of any data.
Gparted automatically moved all required data safely. This is a clear evidence of power of free software. If I were in Microsoft Windows, I had to install another propreitory softwares like partition magic or some other thing like that….and that too not at all user friendly softwares destroy our data….
