Calicut University style of “Computer Science Engineering” !
As we all know, engineering is getting much much popular in Kerala; rather all over India. We have numerous institutions for engineering aspirants in our state, which include Government, Aided and Self Financing institutions!. My college is affiliated to Calicut University, the most prestigious university in Kerala State, providing education in a large number of courses like engineering, arts & science and more.
We had Semester 4 university examination yesterday and the paper was CS04 405 : Computer Organization and Design. We never knew that Funny things were awaiting us on the question paper from the great Calicut University. I draw your attention to one or two questions among them !
- Define Elaboration.
- Google search ” elaboration computer science” gave me a variety of answers, but none connected to our subject Computer Organization and Design. I found some thing related to Ada Programming Language etc.
- Another thing is that, In our textbook by Patterson and Hannessy, Page No. 88 ( and more; see page 128 etc. ), there is a subheading called Elaboration where authors try to explain a bit more on topic they are now dealing with !
- Is this a mistake from examiner that he just took a heading he saw while looking in the textbook for questions and asked us to define that?. Or my mistake that I didn’t find ample time to try a google search before my examination and study what is Elaboration ?. I don’t know !!
- Write short notes on Fallacies and pit falls
- For the kind information of the examiner, Fallacies and Pitfalls are present at the end of each and every chapter in the textbook by Patterson and Hannessy. So which one should I write for your question ?. Authors have used this section to describe those errors/misunderstandings which may occur to their readers while going through the concepts.
- Computer Science Engineering student being asked to add 6 and 7 in binary !.
- I thank the examiner for asking me such a simple question for 5 marks, I took the pain to write 32 bit patterns for both 7 and 6, got the answer 13 in binary, then took the pain to show him the steps that convert binary to decimal. I did the last step since the question showed me 6 and 7 in decimal.
In short, Computer Organization and Design answer papers will be the creative works of Engineering Students!
Bottom Line : Calicut University ( I don’t know much about other universities ) question papers are full of wonders. Sometime they give papers which are really tough/hifi stuffs, else paper contain things like above. Both will lower the quality of students. Our mathematics 4 paper is a best example, the questions were really tough, and we were unable to understand the questions. Atleast, in the case of students like me in Govt. college, the portions covered in lecture sessions are so small that we have to mug up the rest of the modules ourselves. We do that without knowing what we are doing, none of us have the strong foundation in our core topics. Now, we are preparing for CS04 405: Electronics Circuits and Systems, our professor has taught us only 2 or 3 topics in module 1. We don’t even know what the other modules are dealing with, but we have to study that. It is only our need to score marks and B Tech. degree !
Providing quality engineering education and giving birth to 10 Qualified Engineers is much better than giving birth to 100000 Engineers who are not at all qualified!.

Calicut University sets the standard in preparing World Class Computer Science Exams
[...] you are from Stanford, MIT, Berkely etc check out this link to know how to prepare high quality exam [...]
aliyaaa polichu
so well put. its increasingly becoming a tough job for the students to decipher the meaning of question paper, i presume
.
Could some one upload the question paper image? To authenticate the ‘pitfalls!’
HAHA good catch..! but it don’t require you to go to exam.. just take the syllabus book.. its the contents page of the prescribed text books… just be happy that they are clever enough to remove the page numbers from the text book while copying it for syllabus..
Maybe, you should scan and upload the full question paper!
“…the portions covered in lecture sessions are so small that we have to mug up the rest of the modules ourselves…”
I don’t agree with that – nothing prevents the bright/motivated students of a class from learning stuff on their own … I know it is not easy, but if you start early, at least a few core CS papers can be studied and understood. I am not trying to justify the incompetence of the university/teachers but trying to point out what *you* can do to make a difference.
hey cool post man……… did you post a mail with this link to the calicut university head??? he deserves to read it
Can’t believe that they asked the first two questions!!!! Long live Calicut university….
The answers to those could be the following..
Elaboration: Pointer to the 3rd answer
Fallacies and Pitfalls:
Code Number of the question paper = Question paper for COD
Vivek. (an alumini from the same college)
ECS has always been on the darker side, even for us !! I wonder how we passed those papers
..
There were more to the list of such “UNKNOWN” modules.. papers like, Discrete Computational Structures, Electronic Devices & Circuits, Distributed Systems, Maths IV.. And we were (un)fortunate to get the taste of these papers for the first time.. (The syllabi changed with our batch, 2000-2004)..
Sad to know that the situation has not changed even a little
A Proud GECian !
Cheers
words fail me!
This easily is the funniest university question paper I’ve ever come across.. (I did my engineering with the University of Kerala, and fortunately, we had better papers!).
You can perhaps post a photo/scan of the question paper in question (does that sound weird?)
there is something fundamentally wrong with this education system. And I re-confirm its the problem of not making “teaching” an attractive profession.
Sad.
ECS was a nightmare for me too! But COD was interesting, however the question paper is always a funny affair!
Haha.. thats is really bad !!! man that’s the funniest paper I have ever seen. MG was bad (people who never attended exams used to get 75 and ppl who wrote exams got absent, and ppl who copied the exact paper got more than the original author etc..), but never had anything of this scale..
Once in DBMS paper there was a question on define View Server, they mis printed it as News server… One of my friends wrote pages on CNN, BBC, The times website etc… I liked what he did, but sad/fun part is that they didn’t even care to proof read…
Assignments were so fun… Write pages and pages from the text book and write it in A4 bond paper… It was more like an exercise in calligraphy… I improved my handwriting with that…
It is just sad that things have not improved…Even with talks of increased computerization, I wonder what they are doing to have such questions! There seems no proof-reading at all – spelling mistakes, illogical questions. The University needs to wake up some day before people start questioning credibility of our degrees
Other classic questions from Programming paradigms lab: There was a lot for students to pick and it had 2 questions…
1. Implement library in Java
2. Implement bank in Lisp
On another occasion, a student went to a prof for a correction in his paper and the prof’s response was “Once put is put, no more put…” and the student got enlightened..
It just gets sadder and sadder , I think these days you can compare the CS Engineering papers to a Bachelor of Arts paper. And I think you are likely to score higher on the Arts paper because that will be more concept oriented !!
I strongly support Pramode Sir for his second comment and Aanjhan’s comment. Even I remember the paper Information Theory and Computing in the 5th sem. Man that was the most horrifying paper I had ever attended in my life. Aanjhan’s statement remind’s me about my HOD. I remember he told in our class to go through the “Green Book” in the library for the computer networks. And the interesting thing to laugh is that the author of that Green Book was Richard Stevens. Even the authors name couldn’t be remembered by our HOD. Unless students realise the situation in Government college and unless the passion to teach rises among teachers( salary and things are also concerned) nothing is going to change I believe#sigh
Too good.
Do u guys also follow the principle of just putting qn numbers to get marks?
n by d by I, 2002-2006 CSE GEC, UNIV OF CLT
Hey,,, I had a really great CO paper.. I was in MG…
The first question was :
What is “turing” machine??(which i had never herd before)
And I was thinking SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
……………………………………………..
After writing 3 hrs of absolute crap i managed to get 44 he he…
Jain, Can you please upload an image of the question paper?
Oh! Somehow we got through it a few years ago!
blogging on such issues here will not help
bring them to the notice of the board of examiner
for CSE in calicut university and hear what he
has to say
Very great!!!
All engineering students will have to face such types of “fallacies and pitfalls”…. But careful…. You are in an “elaboration” so you have to keep up…!
Understood anything? Naah?? Yea, this is the same what happens when we read an engineering exam question paper!!!
Students with just 10 marks in the entrance examination
are also qualifying for the B.Tech admission.
What kind of questions, other than this, do you expect them to write
and get 44?
God’s own country God’s own education haaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!
